Ethical Corporate Gifts UK: Social Enterprise Hamper vs Branded Merch vs a Voucher
Most companies do not have a gifting problem. They have a default problem. The default is a logo mug (a cheeky gift because really it’s advertising!), a boring tin of supermarket biscuits, or an Amazon voucher.
Those three options are easy to raise and easy to forget. They also say almost nothing about how the company buys.
If you want the gift to do some work - for the recipient, for culture, for a sustainability line - you are choosing between three models.
The three models
1. Branded merch
Mugs, bottles, notebooks, hoodies with the logo.
Good for: events, where people need a useful object on the day.
Bad for: thank-yous. It reads as marketing spend, not appreciation. Most of it is unused within a month.
2. A voucher
Amazon, a high-street card, “pick whatever you want.”
Good for: you have no addresses, no dietary data, and no time.
Bad for: meaning. The recipient already has Amazon. You have outsourced the gift and the thought. Social Stories Club has already made this point in its own Amazon-voucher alternative guide - do not publish another version of that piece.
3. A social-enterprise hamper
Food, drink and small useful things from businesses whose mission is the product.
Good for: client thank-yous, onboarding, year-end, any moment where you want the person to feel considered.
Bad for: if you refuse to collect a delivery address or a diet note. Then use a gift card for a social-enterprise box, not Amazon.
What each one signals
You send | They hear |
|---|---|
Logo merch | “Remember us.” |
Amazon voucher | “We ran out of time.” |
Charity donation in their name | “We spent your gift on our values.” (Often lands badly unless they choose the charity.) |
Social-enterprise hamper with a booklet | “We thought about you, and about how we buy.” |
Legal & General put this in plain language on the corporate page: branded items in previous years, then a Social Stories Club gift, and the explanation behind each component was what people talked about.
Jamie Oliver Group said the same thing from the other side: staff liked learning what the gift supported, because social impact already matters inside the company.
That is the test. If the gift cannot start a two-minute conversation, it is a cost line.
Cost is not the unit price
A £8 mug is not cheaper if 200 sit in cupboards and no-one appreciates it.
A £25 voucher is not kinder if it trains people to expect cash-equivalents.
A £49 Social Impact Gift Hamper is not expensive if it is the one thing in the year that feels like thanks.
Decide the job first:
- Welcome a person: Employee Onboarding Gift Box (£36), note from the manager.
- Thank a client: Client Thank You Gift Hamper (£88).
- Cannot collect addresses: gift card they redeem on a social-enterprise box.
- Need the logo on it: add a card or ribbon to the hamper. Do not let the logo be the gift.
Full range: pre-curated corporate gifts. No minimum on those. Branding or bespoke from 50 units.
When merch or a voucher is still the right call
Be honest about it.
- Conference day, 400 people, they need water: merch.
- 15 remote contractors, no addresses, no shared culture yet: voucher or gift card.
- Legal will not approve food gifts: card or a hamper with reusables which can be created with Build Your Own Gift Hamper.
Do not dress up water or merch as “ethical gifting.” They are logistics.
What to do this week if Christmas is the real deadline
If you need branded cards, a vegan split, or 50+ deliveries to mixed home addresses, start the conversation now. Pre-curated boxes can ship in two working days. Custom work cannot.
Email info@socialstoriesclub.com or book a call with: how many people, staff or clients, budget, diet, alcohol, addresses, whether you want a logo on the card.
