How to Give Corporate Gifts That Build Real Relationships
Why Most Corporate Gifts Are Forgotten
Most corporate gifts are forgotten almost instantly. A branded notebook gets shoved into a drawer somewhere, a bottle of wine gets opened over the weekend and forgotten about a few days later, and another company mug quietly joins the collection already sitting at the back of somebody’s kitchen cupboard. Companies spend huge amounts of money on gifting every year, yet very few gifts actually leave a lasting impression.
But every now and then, somebody receives a gift they talk about for weeks afterwards. They mention it to their partner when they get home, they show it to people in the office, or they bring it up months later when somebody asks them about the best corporate gift they’ve ever received. Those gifts tend to have one thing in common. They tell a story.
Why Humans Remember Stories So Easily
Think about Goldilocks for a second. Most of us probably haven’t heard that story since we were children ourselves, yet somehow we can still remember the three bears, the bowls of porridge that were too hot, too cold and just right, and the beds she climbed into afterwards, despite the fact we’ve likely gone decades without hearing the story again. Stories stick in our brains in a way facts simply don’t, which is why researchers often talk about stories being significantly more memorable than information alone.
What’s interesting is that storytelling is believed to go back far beyond books and films and entertainment. Scientists think humans developed storytelling because it helped us survive. Back when humans lived in tribes, stories helped communities pass on information about danger, trust, fairness and behaviour. If somebody in the tribe stole more than their fair share of food during winter, people needed a way to communicate that behaviour to others. Stories became social glue.
In many ways, gossip and storytelling are closely connected, which probably explains why humans are still so naturally drawn to stories now. The moment somebody starts telling us something emotional, dramatic or intriguing, we instinctively lean in because our brains want to know what happens next.
The Problem With Most Corporate Gifting
The problem is that most corporate gifting completely ignores this.
So many gifts feel transactional, almost as though they’ve been chosen simply to tick a box before Christmas or an employee milestone. They often focus on quantity over quality or branding over meaning, which is why they rarely create any emotional connection with the person receiving them.
But the gifts people remember are usually the ones that feel thoughtful, personal and full of meaning. They are the gifts people can talk about afterwards because there is something interesting behind them.
How Social Stories Club Started
That was one of the reasons we started Social Stories Club.
When we first discovered social enterprises, we were honestly blown away by them. We found incredible businesses creating genuinely brilliant products while also making a positive impact in the world. There were soaps packaged by individuals with disabilities, socks where every pair purchased helped provide another pair to somebody experiencing homelessness, and food brands funding projects that supported communities around the world.
The products themselves were fantastic, but what really stayed with us were the stories behind them. Every product felt like it meant something.
What surprised me most was that I had never even heard the term “social enterprise” before. It sounded like such a positive and exciting idea that I assumed everybody must know about it already, but when we went out into the streets of Edinburgh and Glasgow and asked people whether they knew what a social enterprise was, very few people actually did.
That was the moment we realised there was an opportunity to create a business that showcased these incredible companies through gifting, and Social Stories Club was born.
Why Stories Make Gifts More Memorable
From the beginning, we wanted our gift hampers to feel completely different from the standard corporate hampers people were used to receiving. We didn’t want them to feel generic or forgettable. We wanted people opening the box to discover stories alongside the products themselves, which is why we created a story booklet to include inside every hamper.
Suddenly, instead of simply receiving a bar of chocolate or a pair of socks, people were discovering the mission behind the company that created it, the people impacted by it, and the reason the business existed in the first place.
That changes the entire experience because the gift becomes more than just products inside a box. It becomes something meaningful.
The Packaging Tells A Story Too
What we quickly realised was that storytelling doesn’t stop with the products. The packaging tells a story too. The presentation tells a story. Even the way somebody feels when they open the box becomes part of the overall experience.
We became slightly obsessed with all the little details because those details shape how memorable something feels. Our boxes are sent in biodegradable mailer bags and packed with compostable wood wool, and we spent a huge amount of time thinking about how the products should sit inside the hamper so that opening it felt exciting and beautiful.
We even created a game hidden within the packaging where people can try to spot the Sustainable Development Goals featured throughout the design because we wanted the experience to feel interactive and thoughtful rather than purely functional.
Why Attention To Detail Matters
That attention to detail matters because people can instantly feel the difference between something that has been rushed and something that has genuinely been cared about.
My co-founder Aayush cares enormously about presentation and quality, to the point where we will spend ridiculous amounts of time discussing the placement of products, the colours inside the box, how the note should look, or how we can make the story booklet even more engaging.
It might sound excessive to some people, but those details are often the reason somebody opens the gift and immediately thinks, “Wow, this feels special.”
And that is ultimately what makes a gift memorable. Not necessarily the price tag, but the feeling it creates.
The Best Gifts Create Conversations
The most memorable gifts give people something to talk about afterwards.
Somebody opens the box and tells their partner about the incredible products inside, or mentions that all the packaging was sustainable, or explains how every item had a story connected to it. The gift becomes more than just “something from work.” It becomes an experience, a conversation and a reflection of the company that sent it.
That is why storytelling matters so much in corporate gifting because stories create emotional connection, and emotional connection is what people actually remember.
Long after somebody has forgotten what was inside the average corporate hamper, they will still remember how a thoughtful gift made them feel.
Why Meaningful Gifts Stay With People
One of the things we hear again and again from our customers is that people spend far longer with our gifts than they expected to. They don’t just quickly open the box, take the products out and move on with their day. They sit reading the story booklet, passing products around the room, pointing out details on the packaging and talking about which item they love most. We’ve had companies tell us their teams were still talking about the hampers weeks later, which is incredibly special because that’s exactly what meaningful gifting should do. It should create a moment people genuinely enjoy and remember, rather than feeling like another generic corporate gesture.
Why Human Connection Matters More Than Ever
In a world where people are overwhelmed with advertising, emails and constant noise, thoughtful gifting stands out more than ever because it feels human. A memorable corporate gift says far more than “thank you” or “well done.” It says that somebody took the time to choose something with care, quality and meaning behind it. And when a gift manages to tell a story at the same time, whether that’s through the products, the packaging or the mission behind it, it becomes something people naturally want to share with others. That’s the kind of gifting people remember long after the chocolates have been eaten and the tea has been drunk.
