People Notice More About Your Corporate Gifts Than You Think
A few years ago, I walked into a sustainability-themed event and immediately spotted a giant balloon arch stretching across the entrance.
Red, white and blue balloons everywhere.
Now visually, I’ll admit, it looked fantastic. It made the room feel exciting and celebratory and important. But almost instantly I felt this strange sinking feeling because all I could think about was the waste.
I remember standing there wondering whether the balloons were biodegradable or not. I had absolutely no idea. Maybe they were. Maybe they weren’t. But the fact my brain immediately went there says something important, because I know I’m not the only person who notices these things anymore.
A lot of people do.
The other day I was scrolling Facebook and saw a video of a family celebrating a wedding anniversary with a huge balloon release. About 50 people all stood together holding helium balloons before letting them drift up into the sky at the same time. It was clearly meant to feel emotional and beautiful, but all I could think about was where those balloons would end up a few hours later.
Because they don’t disappear.
At some point one of those balloons is probably going to end up dangling from a tree somewhere, faded and tangled up in branches, or floating through a field until some poor sheep starts chewing on the ribbon. And when I looked at the comments underneath the video, thousands of people were saying exactly the same thing.
“What about wildlife?”
“Why are people still doing balloon releases?”
“That’s just littering with better PR.”
What fascinated me most was this: I highly doubt those 50 family members were bad people. Most probably hadn’t really thought about it properly. And maybe some of them had thought about it, but didn’t want to be the awkward person who pointed it out and ruined the moment for everybody else.
Honestly, I understood that feeling completely because I felt exactly the same thing at the sustainability event.
I noticed the balloon arch immediately, but I didn’t say anything. I didn’t want to embarrass anyone after they’d clearly worked hard organising the event, and I definitely didn’t want to sound judgemental. So instead I just quietly thought to myself that if there was a feedback form afterwards, I’d probably mention it there instead.
And I think this happens far more than companies realise.
People often notice these things. They just don’t always say them out loud.
The Sustainability Problem Companies Don’t See
One of the biggest mistakes companies make with sustainable gifting and sustainable events is assuming people only notice the obvious things.
They assume people notice:
- the branding
- the logo
- the sustainability messaging
- the keynote speakers
- the social media photos
But increasingly, people are paying attention to the smaller details too.
The packaging.
The waste.
The materials.
The throwaway decorations.
The plastic cups.
The branded merchandise nobody actually wanted.
And interestingly, those little details often create stronger emotional reactions than the expensive sustainability campaign itself. Because sustainability isn’t just something people want companies to say anymore. They want to feel it consistently throughout the experience.
The Plastic Cup Moment
The funny thing is that parts of the event were genuinely lovely.
There was an incredible food platter and I still remember being disproportionately excited that they’d included strawberries because strawberries are my favourite and corporate catering usually sticks to cheaper fruit like apple slices and slightly sad grapes. Then I walked over to the drinks station.
Plastic cups. Stacks and stacks of single-use plastic cups being filled with elderflower fizz.
And instantly I got that same uncomfortable feeling again because once you become environmentally conscious, it’s very difficult to stop noticing waste. You stop seeing a plastic cup as “just a cup” and instead picture some enormous pile of plastic sitting somewhere on the planet long after all of us are gone.
That sounds dramatic, but I know loads of people now have that same gut reaction, especially younger generations who’ve grown up constantly hearing about ocean pollution, climate change and landfill waste.
Not everybody thinks like this, of course. But enough people do that it matters.
Why Gen Z Employees Are Changing Corporate Gifting
One thing I’ve noticed over the last few years is that younger employees are incredibly aware of whether a company’s actions actually match its values.
You can’t really get away with performative sustainability anymore. People notice when:
- an “eco” event creates loads of unnecessary waste
- sustainable branding is paired with cheap plastic merchandise
- businesses talk about impact but choose convenience every time
- gifts feel mass-produced and thoughtless
And importantly, they don’t always complain directly. Sometimes they just quietly feel disappointed. That’s the part businesses often miss.
People are far more environmentally conscious than they used to be, but many also don’t want to create awkwardness or seem overly critical. So instead of saying:
“This feels wasteful,”
they simply leave feeling slightly disconnected from the brand experience.
And emotional disconnection matters enormously in business. Especially in workplaces where companies are trying to build culture, loyalty and engagement.
Then Came the Gift Hamper
At the end of the event, I was handed a corporate gift hamper as a thank you for speaking. I always find it slightly funny being given gift hampers because I run Social Stories Club, a sustainable gifting company, and people sometimes become oddly nervous giving me gifts as though I’m secretly judging the ribbon technique or auditing the packaging materials in real time.
One time somebody actually gave me one of our own hampers back to me, which honestly was hilarious and also quite lovely. But this hamper was clearly from a mass-produced gifting company and the first thing I noticed was the thick plastic wrapping stretched tightly around the wicker basket. Then there was more plastic inside holding products in place, more plastic wrapped around snacks, more shiny packaging that would almost certainly be thrown away within minutes.
And suddenly I realised something important. One of the biggest sustainable gifting mistakes companies make is assuming people only notice the products inside the hamper. They don’t. People notice the whole experience around it.
Whether it feels thoughtful.
Whether it has an interesting story.
Whether it feels aligned with the company’s values.
Whether somebody clearly chose the easiest option available.
The packaging communicates just as much as the gift itself.
Sustainable Gifting Is About More Than Looking “Eco”
I think businesses sometimes reduce sustainability down to aesthetics.
A green logo.
A leafy design.
A slogan about saving the planet.
But genuinely sustainable corporate gifting is usually much less about appearances and much more about intention. It’s about asking questions like:
- Will people actually use this?
- Is there unnecessary waste here?
- Does this feel thoughtful?
- Does this align with our values?
- Are we creating something memorable or just more clutter?
Because ironically, the most sustainable gifts are often the ones people genuinely love enough to keep.
That’s why meaningful sustainable gift hampers tend to create such emotional reactions. When people receive products from ethical brands, social enterprises, local makers or women-owned businesses, they often connect with the story behind the products as much as the products themselves. And that emotional connection is what makes gifts memorable.
What We Do Differently at Social Stories Club
At Social Stories Club, we became slightly obsessed with trying to make our sustainable gift hampers feel thoughtful without creating unnecessary waste. Our hampers aren’t wrapped in plastic. Instead, they’re sent in biodegradable mailer bags which admittedly look so much like plastic that one customer once left us a one-star review complaining that their sustainable hamper had arrived in plastic packaging.
The irony was that the bag wasn’t plastic at all. In fact, years ago we massively overordered these biodegradable mailer bags and left tens of thousands sitting in our warehouse for several years. Then one day I walked in and noticed strange flaky bits all over the shelves and genuinely thought: “Where on earth have all the mailer bags gone?”
Turns out they had literally biodegraded in the warehouse. Apparently biodegradable mailer bags have expiration dates, which was news to me at the time. It was honestly a bit like discovering packaging behaves like biscuits.
Sustainable Events Can Still Feel Beautiful
One thing I really wish more companies understood is that sustainable events and sustainable corporate gifting do not need to feel boring, preachy or joyless. You can still create beautiful experiences without huge amounts of waste.
When I used to run in-person events myself, we’d make colourful paper chains draped across the room because they felt playful and celebratory while still being made from renewable materials. Reusable cups can still look lovely.
Sustainable corporate gift hampers can still feel luxurious and exciting to receive. Actually, I’d argue they often feel more special because people can sense the thought behind them. And really, that’s what sustainable gifting comes down to in the end.
Not perfection. Just thoughtfulness.
