The Corporate Gift That Accidentally Proved My Entire Point

The Corporate Gift That Accidentally Proved My Entire Point

A few years ago, something really embarrassing happened and I have no idea if the other person even realised. I was invited to speak at a corporate event about sustainability.

The company wanted to become more sustainable across its supply chain and had invited me, Karis, founder of Social Stories Club, along for a fireside chat about ethical gifting, social enterprise, and the stories behind our sustainable gift hampers. The conversation was brilliant.

We spoke about meaningful gifts, sustainability, supporting smaller businesses, and how companies can create genuine positive impact through the choices they make.

I make all my talks fun and interactive and everyone seemed incredibly engaged. People were nodding along, taking notes and asking thoughtful questions.

At one point during the conversation, I even spoke about how rubbish Amazon vouchers are as gifts. Then, at the end of the event, they handed me a card to thank me for coming along. “Thank you very much”! I smiled, opened the card and inside was a corporate gift, a £20 Amazon voucher. I genuinely almost laughed. Not because I wasn’t grateful, but because it accidentally proved my entire point. And the funny part was, the person giving it to me clearly hadn’t realised.

That moment has stayed with me for years because it perfectly captured something many businesses still misunderstand about gifting:

A gift is never just a gift. It communicates something instantly. Whether somebody thought carefully. Whether they understand you. Whether they took the easiest option available. Whether your company values actually match your branding. People feel all of that immediately. Especially employees. Especially younger employees.

Why Generic Corporate Gifts Often Have the Opposite Effect

Now look, I understand why companies choose Amazon vouchers. They’re quick, easy and convenient. And occasionally, like most people, I absolutely end up panic-ordering something from Amazon at 11pm because I need it yesterday.

Convenience has its place. But as a gift? It often creates the exact opposite emotional reaction companies are hoping for. Because gifting is emotional. Even in the workplace. The second somebody receives a gift, consciously or subconsciously, they start asking themselves questions like:

  • Did someone actually think about this?
  • Was care put into this?
  • Does this reflect the company’s values?
  • Am I being appreciated, or processed?

Most people won’t say those questions out loud. But they feel them. And increasingly, employees are becoming highly sensitive to whether something feels thoughtful or transactional.

The Sustainable Gift Bag That Completely Changed My Mood

Fast forward to March this year. I was speaking at another event, this time in the Scottish Borders, and everyone had little gift bags waiting on the backs of their chairs. I was excited. I absolutely love gifts and was immediately rummaging through mine to see what was inside.

But this experience felt completely different. Inside were handmade products from women-owned businesses, thoughtful little gifts made from recycled materials, handmade soaps with stories behind the ingredients, and products created by people who clearly cared deeply about what they were making.

One tiny recycled fridge magnet actually made me smile because my birthday was coming up and I’d been meaning to find something to pin birthday cards onto the fridge with. Such a tiny thing. But suddenly it felt weirdly personal and thoughtful. And that’s the thing about meaningful gifts. They make people feel seen. Not marketed to. Every item had a story behind it.

You could feel the care, the effort, the intention. And intention changes everything.

Why Sustainable Corporate Gifts Matter More Than Ever to Gen Z Employees

Recently, I was speaking to some Gen Z friends about workplace gifting and they said something fascinating. A few admitted they actually feel uncomfortable receiving Amazon vouchers because it feels so disconnected from their values. Some had even left vouchers sitting unused for months because they didn’t really want to spend them.

What older generations often see as convenient, many younger employees increasingly see as:

  • impersonal
  • wasteful
  • overly corporate
  • ethically misaligned

And honestly, I think that says a lot about where workplace culture is heading. Because younger generations care deeply about:

  • sustainability
  • ethics
  • waste reduction
  • supporting smaller businesses
  • authenticity
  • company values
  • meaningful experiences

And they are incredibly good at spotting when something feels performative. You can say your business cares about sustainability all day long. But if your employee appreciation gifts are generic plastic merchandise or quick convenience purchases, people notice the disconnect immediately.

The opposite is also true. A thoughtful sustainable corporate gift hamper filled with products from ethical brands, social enterprises, women-owned businesses, local makers, or vegan suppliers communicates something very different. It says: “We actually thought about this.” That matters far more than many companies realise.

What Gen Z Employees Actually Want From Corporate Gifts

Interestingly, it’s usually not about spending more money. The best sustainable corporate gifts often feel meaningful because they are:

  • thoughtful
  • useful
  • low waste
  • beautifully presented
  • ethically sourced
  • personal
  • connected to a story

We’re increasingly seeing businesses move away from generic branded merchandise and towards sustainable corporate gift hampers that feel more human and intentional. Especially for:

  • employee onboarding
  • team appreciation
  • speaker gifts
  • event gifting
  • client thank you gifts
  • sustainable corporate Christmas gifts

Because thoughtful gifting is becoming part of company culture itself.

The Emotional Reactions We See Again and Again

At Social Stories Club, we often see incredibly emotional reactions to our ethical gift hampers. And I don’t mean polite “thank you” emails. I mean wonderful people who really care and feel deeply emotional.

Just a few weeks ago, somebody actually cried on the phone to us because they were so moved by the stories behind the products and how excited their team had been to receive the gifts.

She spoke about how meaningful it felt to support businesses creating positive impact. How much conversation the gifts sparked. How people were passing products around the office reading the stories behind them. And what struck me most was this: She wasn’t emotional because somebody had received “stuff”. She was emotional because the gifts reflected the kind of workplace culture she wanted to help create.

That’s powerful.

Sustainable Corporate Gifting Is About More Than Products

For years, corporate gifting often felt like an afterthought.

Bottle of wine.
Branded mug.
Notebook.
Voucher.
Done.

But employees increasingly expect more than that now. Especially Gen Z employees entering the workforce. People want alignment between what companies say and what they actually do. And gifts are one of those surprisingly visible moments where company culture becomes tangible. That doesn’t mean every company needs extravagant budgets. It simply means people want:

  • thoughtfulness over convenience
  • meaning over ticking a box
  • connection over generic branding

The Best Gifts Tell a Story

That’s really what this all comes down to. Stories.

A handmade soap becomes more meaningful when you know the story behind the person who made it.

A recycled product becomes memorable when you understand the impact behind it.

A sustainable corporate gift hamper becomes emotional when recipients feel the care and thought behind it.

That’s what we’ve always believed at Social Stories Club. Not that gifts need to be perfect. But that they should feel intentional. Because long after somebody opens a gift, what they actually remember is how it made them feel. And honestly, I still remember that Amazon voucher years later. Just not for the reasons they intended.
