Welcome to the Team: Why Employee Onboarding Gifts Matter More Than You Think

Welcome to the Team: Why Employee Onboarding Gifts Matter More Than You Think

One of my favourite moments at Social Stories Club happens before a new team member has even started their first task.

Whenever somebody joins our team, we make sure there is a gift box waiting for them on their desk when they arrive. I love watching their reaction as they open it. There is something really special about seeing somebody discover a collection of products that have been chosen specifically for them.

Before putting together their gift, I always try to do a little detective work. Do they have a sweet tooth? Are they obsessed with chocolate? Would they appreciate luxury soap? Are they the sort of person who loves cosy socks? The answers help me choose products that I think they will genuinely enjoy.

The reaction is nearly always the same. Surprise.

So many people have told me that they have never received a welcome gift when starting a new job before. Considering we are a gifting company, perhaps it shouldn't be surprising that we give gifts to our own team. However, it did make me curious. If such a small gesture can make somebody feel so welcome, why aren't more companies doing it?

That question led me down a bit of a rabbit hole.

I started asking friends, family members, and people I met at networking events about their first day experiences. I asked them whether they had ever received an onboarding gift and, if they had, what they thought about it. The answers were fascinating.

Many people had never received a gift at all. Others had, and what stood out was how clearly they remembered the experience years later. Interestingly, very few people could remember details about their induction programme, training sessions, or onboarding paperwork. Yet they could vividly recall the thoughtful gift they received on their first day and how it made them feel.

It wasn't really about the gift itself. It was about what the gift represented.

It said, "We're excited you're here."

It said, "We've been thinking about you before you arrived."

It said, "You're important."

When you think about it, those are exactly the messages every new employee wants to hear when they walk through the door for the first time.

Starting a new job can be incredibly nerve-wracking. You are meeting new colleagues, learning new systems, trying to remember names, and desperately hoping you don't accidentally embarrass yourself before lunch. Even the most confident people often feel a little uncertain on their first day.

That is why first impressions matter so much.

A thoughtful onboarding experience can set the tone for an employee's entire journey with a company. It helps people feel comfortable, valued, and excited about the future. On the other hand, a poor onboarding experience can create doubts from day one.

What happens when you get employee onboarding gifts wrong

One person I spoke to shared a story that perfectly illustrated this.

They arrived for their first day at work only to discover that their manager had gone on annual leave for the entire week. There was an energy bar waiting for them which got them thinking, was this intended as a gift? Then came an awful week. Nobody had planned any work for them. Nobody knew what they were supposed to be doing. They spent five days sitting in an office with virtually nothing to do.

When their manager eventually returned, they were criticised for not being productive enough during their first week. Needless to say, it wasn't exactly the warm welcome they had been hoping for.

Stories like this came up more often than I expected. They weren't always quite so dramatic, but many people described feeling forgotten, overlooked, or like an inconvenience during their first few days.

By contrast, the people who spoke positively about their onboarding experience almost always mentioned how welcomed and appreciated they felt.

Interestingly, many of those positive experiences included some form of onboarding gift.

Of course, not all employee welcome gifts are created equal.

One person described receiving a large drawstring sports bag covered in company branding. Inside was a branded water bottle, a branded keyring, a branded stress ball, and a handful of other branded items.

The company presented the gift with great excitement.

The employee smiled politely.

Then quietly admitted that most of it ended up in the bin.

What made the story even worse was that they had attended a networking event two months earlier and received exactly the same gift pack from the company's exhibition stand in exchange for providing their email address.

It wasn't really a gift at all.

It was marketing material.

The problem with heavily branded merchandise is that it often feels more like advertising than appreciation. Rather than making somebody feel special, it can leave them feeling like the company is more interested in promoting itself than welcoming a new team member.

People know the difference between something that has been chosen thoughtfully and something that has simply been ordered in bulk.

Another interesting theme emerged when I asked people about the worst onboarding gifts they had received.

Surprisingly, Amazon gift cards came up again and again.

At first, I found this quite unexpected. Surely gift cards are a safe option?

However, the more people explained their reasoning, the more it made sense.

Many people felt that Amazon gift cards were impersonal. They required almost no thought or effort. Several people also mentioned that they actively try to avoid shopping on Amazon where possible. Instead, they prefer supporting small businesses, local makers, female founders, social enterprises, and ethical brands.

Receiving an Amazon gift card on their first day felt less like a thoughtful welcome and more like a box-ticking exercise.

Employee Onboarding Gifts that Teams want to Receive

The best onboarding gifts were very different. They weren't necessarily expensive. What they had in common was thoughtfulness.

The gifts people remembered most often included a handwritten note, a personal touch, or something that reflected the values of the organisation. They made people feel seen as individuals rather than employees.

One of our clients does this brilliantly.

Every time a new team member joins their organisation, they send them a Social Stories Club gift. However, what makes the gift truly special is the message that accompanies it.

Each note is written personally by the new employee's manager. They explain why they are excited for that person to join the team, what qualities stood out during the recruitment process, and what they are looking forward to working on together.

Every message reminds the recipient that they were chosen for a reason.

We print these messages and place them inside the gift boxes. Reading them is genuinely one of my favourite parts of the process because you can immediately tell when a company truly cares about its people.

The organisations that create great employee experiences rarely stop at gifts. They invest time in creating positive cultures, supporting wellbeing, recognising achievements, and helping their people grow.

Perhaps that is why so many of the companies giving thoughtful onboarding gifts also seemed to have happier employees. It is simply a visible sign of a deeper culture of care.

At Social Stories Club, we believe gifts should tell stories. That is why every product inside our gift boxes has a positive impact attached to it.The soap is packaged by people with disabilities. The socks help provide essential items to people experiencing homelessness. The chocolate supports businesses creating opportunities for women facing barriers to employment. Every product has a purpose and a story.

These stories turn a simple welcome gift into something much more meaningful. Instead of receiving another branded water bottle, employees discover products that are helping to make the world a little better.

Many recipients tell us that these stories are their favourite part of the gift.

They love knowing that their arrival has created a ripple effect of positivity beyond the walls of their new workplace.

In many ways, that is what great onboarding is all about.

It is about helping people feel connected.

Connected to their colleagues.

Connected to the company's values.

Connected to something bigger than themselves.

The good news is that creating this feeling doesn't have to be expensive. A thoughtful employee onboarding gift can cost surprisingly little compared to the cost of recruiting and training a new team member. Yet the impact can be significant.

People may forget the paperwork they completed on their first day. They may forget the passwords they were given. They may even forget what they had for lunch. But they rarely forget how they were made to feel.

A thoughtful onboarding gift sends a clear message from the very beginning. It says that people matter. It says that culture matters. And it says that this organisation values human connection.

If you are looking for a simple way to welcome new employees, strengthen your company culture, and create a memorable first impression, an employee onboarding gift is a great place to start.

And if you'd like that gift to support social enterprises, create meaningful impact, and tell a beautiful story along the way, we'd love to help.
